Health Benefits of Smoothies

Smoothies are thick shake type drinks filled mainly with fruit or vegetables and other nutrient dense ingredients.  They make wonderful options for a meal or a snack when made with clean natural ingredients.

Don’t be fooled by the claims that smoothies made from prepackaged mixes with chemically altered ingredients are a wise health food option and/or weight loss tool.  This is purely a marketing ploy to make you think you are living healthy.  The claims of life long weight loss from these products are strictly sensationalism as they are just another  Yo-Yo Diet masquerading behind hype, junk science and packaging.

Good Smoothies Are Nutrient-Dense & Contain Fat

The best smoothies are made with natural, all real, nutrient-dense ingredients that provide vitamins and oils necessary for good more complete nutrition. Fat is required for biological functions and is burned by your body for energy.  A truly healthy smoothie should have some dietary fat for the body to use in assimilating the vitamins.  Simply blending a banana with ice and skim milk does provide a great deal of benefits or nutrients.

Smoothies Help Keep You Hydrated

A smoothie helps to keep you hydrated, something soda and coffee won’t do. Since your body pulls water from many foods in order to stay hydrated, you won’t have to drink water when you’re sipping on a smoothie (especially a homemade one without sugar). Non-Dairy Milk and Goat’s yogurt are largely water, so if your smoothie is Non-dairy-based, you’ll quench your thirst. In hot weather, add some ice cubes to the blender for extra water.

Healthy Smoothies Are Simple to Make

When you have a good blender and easily accessible, quality ingredients, making delicious, healthy smoothies is a snap. Start with 250 – 50ml of Almond milk, goat yogurt, fresh or frozen fruit. For additional health benefits add some spinach or kale, watercress and other similar leafy greens.   Most fruits are high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals adding a power boost to your day.  Certain combinations are quite tropical and make a great summer treat.  Other excellent ingredient choice is  extra virgin coconut oil, shredded coconut and vanilla pod seeds.

Smoothies Make a Healthy Breakfast

A homemade smoothie for your morning meal is an excellent choice for the breakfast on-the-go. You can make it in minutes before you leave the house and sip it on your way to work, school or just in your home office.  Drinking a smoothie in the morning keeps you from indulging in empty carbohydrates like donuts and removes the temptation of the drive through. If you have trouble taking cod liver oil by itself, add a teaspoon to your smoothie.  You’ll never notice a difference in taste and you’ll add a great dose of essential fatty acids as well as vitamins to your nutritious morning meal. In fact, a smoothie made this way packs more usable nutrition than most multivitamin supplements.

Better Than Multi-Vitamins

Despite what most people may think, daily “multi-vitamins” aren’t even regulated by the FDA and are not demonstrably proven to have significant health benefits, and few have been shown conclusively effective.  The best way to get nutrition is from food, and consuming a healthful smoothie every day gives you most of your nutrition in one proven, delicious dosage.

DBM COMMENT

We would prefer that you use a smoothie as a SUPPLEMENTAL source of nutrients and not as a meal replacement.  However, having a smoothie for breakfast or lunch/dinner is certainly far superior than grabbing something out of the microwave or a box.

DBM uses smoothies for those with compromised health and for those on DBM Programs as a means to provide valuable nutrition whilst “repairing damage” to the gut.

The Recipes in these sections: Supportive – Juices, Smoothies, Salads, Teas, and Soups are intended to support the body whilst following one of our Health Programs. We recommend juices on various programs, that are patient specific, and are not as a rule used as a general meal replacement. We do encourage the use of juices, smoothies or soups as a means of gaining ‘easily assimilated’ nutrients for thos with health challenges. A Whole Food Plant-Based Diet is what we advocate to keep you healthy and even to get you healthy – but juice or liquids-only diets are often a necessity. Please speak to your DBM Physician / Practitioner for more guidance.

The Daily Nutrition pages will provide more insight into how we look at food and the Eat To Live section will provide a variety of menus and recipes.
