Although there are many products, diets, nostrums, supplements, practices, methods and concoctions that claim to “boost your immune system”, there is not much evidence that they help.
There is evidence however that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the best way to keep your immune system working well.
You should therefore:
- eat a healthy balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and is low in saturated fat
- exercise regularly
- maintain a healthy weight
- get plenty of sleep
- if you MUST drink alcohol – then do so in moderation only.
- do not smoke – smoking rapidly disables the immune system
Stress can also make you more prone to illness, so it is important to look after your mental and emotional health too.
