The Brain and Its Main Parts

Here are just a few of the many brain parts and their role in your daily life.

Cerebral Cortex
The cerebral cortex is the outermost layer of the cerebral hemisphere. This is composed solely of gray matter. With the cortices acting asymmetrical, both hemispheres are able to analyze sensory data, perform memory functions, learn new information, form thoughts and make decisions. As you can only imagine, this is an extremely active part of the brain that is used on a daily basis.

The Hemispheres
There are two hemispheres of the brain, the right and left. The right hemisphere is holistic functioning in that it processes multi-sensory input simultaneously in order to provide holistic pictures of one’s environment. Dancing, playing basketball and gymnastics are all coordinated by the right hemisphere.

The other side of the brain is the left hemisphere, which is sequential analysis. This consists of systematic, logical interpretation of information. You might think of this as mathematics, abstraction and reasoning. While memory for the right hemisphere is stored in auditory, visual and spatial modalities, the memory from your left hemisphere is stored in a language format.

Frontal Lobe
The brain function of the frontal lobe consists of cognition and memory. The prefrontal area provides the ability to concentrate and attend elaborate thoughts. This is essentially the gatekeeper as it provides judgment, personality and all of your emotional traits.

Parietal Lobe
The parietal lobe processes sensory input and sensory discrimination. It is the primary and secondary somatic area and works on body orientation.

Occipital Lobe
This is responsible for and acts as the primary visual reception area. It allows for visual interpretation and can result in a loss of vision or the ability to recognize objects seen in the opposite field of vision if it is damaged.

Temporal Lobe
The temporal lobe has a brain function responsible for auditory receptive related material. This is how you express behavior, practice language and receptive speech, and store memory. Any information you retrieve at a later date is because of your temporal lobe.

Limbic System
The final brain function worth noting is the limbic system, which is considered the olfactory pathway. This is where the amygdala and those pathways exist along with hippocampi and those pathways. This is also associated with limbic lobes like sex, rage, fear and emotions.
